Shapes All Around Us

๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After this article, you should be able to:

  • Recognize circles, squares, triangles and rectangles
  • Count sides and corners
  • Find shapes in everyday objects

Shapes are hiding everywhere โ€” in your breakfast, your toys and your bedroom! Let us learn their names.

The shape squad

  • ๐Ÿ”ต Circle โ€” perfectly round, no corners. Like a ball, a pizza, the sun!
  • ๐ŸŸฆ Square โ€” 4 equal sides, 4 corners. Like a window or a chessboard square.
  • ๐Ÿ”บ Triangle โ€” 3 sides, 3 corners. Like a slice of pizza or a mountain.
  • โ–ญ Rectangle โ€” 4 sides, 4 corners, two long and two short. Like a door or a book.
  • โญ Star โ€” 5 points (usually). Like the ones in the sky at night.

Count the sides

A triangle has 3 sides, a square has 4, a circle has 0 straight sides โ€” it is one smooth curve! Counting sides and corners is the beginning of geometry.

Shape hunt at home

  • Find 3 circles in your kitchen.
  • Find a rectangle in your bedroom (your bed!).
  • Build a house from one square and one triangle.

Play!

Try the shape matching game and the geometry trainer when you want a challenge.
