For curious minds ages 3–12

➕ Helping with Addition

Everything you need to help — without doing it for them.

🎯 What the child needs to learn: The child needs to combine two amounts and count the total — and eventually to do it without counting every item.

🧭 Simple explanation (for you)

Addition is putting groups together. Start with real objects: 3 apples and 2 apples make 5 apples. Later, number bonds to 10 (7+3, 6+4) make everything faster.

✨ Example: Example: 8 + 7. Make ten first: 8 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 5 = 15.

❓ Questions to ask

  • “How many altogether?”
  • “Can you make 10 first?”
  • “What is 8 + 2? And what is left?”
  • “Does your answer make sense?”

💡 Hints (not answers)

  • Count real objects first
  • Make ten to make it easier
  • Draw the groups
  • Check by counting

🏡 Practice activity

Plate maths: put snacks on two plates, combine them, count the total, and write the sum together.
