For curious minds ages 3–12

🍕 Helping with Fractions

Everything you need to help — without doing it for them.

🎯 What the child needs to learn: The child needs to see fractions as parts of one whole — halves, quarters, then more.

🧭 Simple explanation (for you)

A fraction is part of a whole. Cut a pizza into 4 equal parts: each is one quarter (1/4). Two parts are 2/4 — the same as one half. Equal parts are the key.

✨ Example: Example: half of 8 is 4. A quarter of 8 is 2. Draw the pizza, count the slices.

❓ Questions to ask

  • “How many equal parts?”
  • “What is one part called?”
  • “What is half of that?”
  • “Can you show it with food?”

💡 Hints (not answers)

  • Use real food cut into equal parts
  • Draw the whole and shade parts
  • Compare: which is bigger, 1/2 or 1/4?
  • Connect to division (half = ÷2)

🏡 Practice activity

Pizza fractions: cut, name, compare and eat the quarters.
