For curious minds ages 3–12

➖ Helping with Subtraction

Everything you need to help — without doing it for them.

🎯 What the child needs to learn: The child needs to understand taking away, finding the difference, and the link back to addition.

🧭 Simple explanation (for you)

Subtraction is taking away or finding the difference. Objects make it real: 10 raisins, eat 3, count 7. Remember: 10 - 3 = 7 because 7 + 3 = 10.

✨ Example: Example: 15 - 6. Think: 15 - 5 = 10, then 10 - 1 = 9.

❓ Questions to ask

  • “How many are left?”
  • “How many did we take away?”
  • “What plus 6 makes 15?”
  • “Can you check by adding back?”

💡 Hints (not answers)

  • Use real objects to take away
  • Count backwards for small numbers
  • Check every subtraction with addition
  • Draw it

🏡 Practice activity

The disappearing snacks: start with 10 small snacks, eat some, count what remains, write the sum.
