Division: Sharing Fairly

Division means sharing fairly so everyone gets the same. The sign is ÷ (we say "divided by").
Sharing apples
You have 6 apples and 2 friends. How can you share them fairly?
🍎🍎🍎 → friend one
🍎🍎🍎 → friend two
Each friend gets 3 apples. We write:
6 ÷ 2 = 3
One apple at a time
The sharing method works every time: deal one apple to each group, then another, then another, until nothing is left. Count one group and you know the answer.
Division is backwards multiplication
If 6 ÷ 2 = 3, then 3 × 2 = 6. They are two sides of the same coin! Use this to check your answers.
Practice corner
- 8 ÷ 2 = ? (eight stars, two groups)
- 10 ÷ 5 = ? (ten fish, five bowls)
- 12 ÷ 3 = ? (twelve cookies, three friends)
