The I Do, We Do, You Do Routine
๐ฏ Learning objectives
After this article, you should be able to:
- Understand the three stages of guided practice
- Use the I Do / We Do / You Do pattern at home
- Find guided practice widgets inside lessons
Every skill is learned the same way: first you watch, then you try with help, then you fly alone. Teachers call it guided practice, and the pattern has three names.
The three stages
| Stage | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ I Do | The system demonstrates the full solution. | 7 + 3 = 10 |
| ๐ค We Do | The child completes it with assistance and hints. | 7 + ? = 10 |
| ๐ช You Do | The child completes it independently. | 7 + 3 = ? |
The "We Do" stage is the heart of it: the missing number means the child is doing real thinking, while the hint button is always one tap away. Help fades exactly as confidence grows.
Why the middle step matters
Skipping from "I Do" to "You Do" is where children get stuck and discouraged. The "We Do" stage lets the child practise with a safety net โ the skill is built before it is tested.
Try it yourself
The Guided Practice: Addition lesson contains three full I Do / We Do / You Do panels. The same template is a reusable building block โ administrators can drop a guided practice panel into any lesson.
