🧩 Parts of speech

Words have jobs! Dog is a naming word. Run is a doing word. Big is a describing word.

🏷️ Noun

A naming word

Names a person, place, thing or animal.

e.g. dog, school, Singapore, teacher

🔄 Pronoun

A word that takes the place of a name

Used instead of a noun so we do not repeat it.

e.g. I, you, he, she, it, we, they

🏃 Verb

A doing word

Shows an action or a state.

e.g. run, jump, eat, is, have

🎨 Adjective

A describing word

Tells us more about a noun.

e.g. big, red, happy, enormous

🪄 Adverb

A how/when word

Tells us how, when or where something happens.

e.g. quickly, always, here, very

📍 Preposition

A position word

Shows where or when something is.

e.g. in, on, under, behind, before

🔗 Conjunction

A joining word

Joins words or ideas together.

e.g. and, but, because, so, if

☝️ Determiner

A pointing word

Goes in front of a noun to point at it or count it.

e.g. a, an, the, this, my, two

💥 Interjection

A surprise word

A short word that shows a strong feeling.

e.g. Wow! Ouch! Hooray! Oh no!
